Asalia, la historia de mi nombre عسلية
Hoy quiero compartir con vosotros el origen de mi nombre artístico, ya son unos quince años que me bautizaron de este modo, y sucedió así: caminaba por el famoso bazar Khan el Halili, buscaba unos bonitos vestidos de danza oriental. Allí estaba Mohamad Gomaa que tenia una tienda preciosa, variada, tenia vestidos y muchos elementos.
Today I want to share with you the origin of my artistic name, it´s been about fifteen years since I was baptized in this way, and it happened like this: I was walking through the famous Khan el Halili bazaar, looking for some pretty bellydance dresses, there was Mohamed Gomaa who had a beautiful shop, so varied.
Hacia tiempo no le veía, y ahí me lo encontré, en medio de una callecita estrecha como todas las calles en general en este bazar tan especial, me llamo así “eh el assal di…enty 3assalya”
I hadn’t seen him for a long time, and there I found him, in the middle of a narrow little street like all the streets in general in this very special bazaar. He called me » eh el assal di…enty 3assalya”
Yo sonreía, Mohamad me explicó que es un dulce típico egipcio hecho con puro azúcar de caña, melaza y sésamo, luego añadió que 3asal es miel, luego 3asalia sería lo que procede de la miel, dulzura tal vez.
I smiled, Mohamad explained to me that it is a typical Egyptian sweet made with pure cane sugar, molasses, and sesame, then he added that 3asal means honey, then 3assalya could be translated as sweetness.

Y ahí yo muy curiosa, ¿ pero puede ser un nombre de mujer?, y me dijo que por supuesto, y entonces decidí que ni como mote cariñoso ni por casualidad, ese sería mi nombre artístico.

Lo simplifiqué de 3asaleyya a Asalia, mejor para todo el mundo, cuando en las actuaciones dicen mi nombre y los presentadores no son árabes, lo dicen de las maneras más variopintas, también facilitarlo para mis amigos de todo el mundo y para mi familia.
I simplified it from 3assalya to Asalia, better for everyone, when in the performances they say my name and the presenters are not Arabs, they say it in the most varied ways, also make it easier for my friends from all over the world and for my family.
En realidad, el 3 lo usan los árabes para expresar la letra (ع), nuestro alfabeto carece de ese sonido, de esa letra, con lo cual los árabes al querer expresarse con nuestro alfabeto (español, francés, y otros tantos) utilizan diferentes números para suplir esas letras que no existen en nuestro alfabeto.
Actually, 3 is used by the Arabs to express the letter (ع), our alphabet lacks that sound, that letter, with which the Arabs, wanting to express themselves with our alphabet (Spanish, French, and many others), use different numbers to supply those letters that do not exist in our alphabet.
Desde entonces muchas anécdotas han sucedido por mi nombre, me he reído mucho, a los niños egipcios les encanta mi nombre, me han hecho chistes y rimas, me han cantado canciones con mi nombre, a los adultos le recuerda a su niñez, cuando comían esta chuchería.
Since then many anecdotes have happened because of my name, I have laughed a lot, Egyptian children love my name, they have told me jokes and rhymes, they have sung songs with my name, it reminds adults of their childhood, when they were kids and ate this candy.
Recuerdo hace años bailando en Sharm el Sheikh, los animadores antes de presentarme hicieron una animación en el proyector, casi no podía salir porque estaba partiéndome de la risa. El público podía ver mi nombre y miel cayendo en forma de cascada, bienvenidos al show de Asalia y llovían asalias (la chuchería) y de repente una imagen mía, imaginaros mi cara de chiste, una sonrisa de oreja a oreja y las risas de la gente, pero risas buenas, todo con mucho respeto.
I remember years ago dancing in Sharm el Sheikh, the animators before introducing me made an animation on the projector, I could hardly get out because I was bursting with laughter. The public could see my name and honey falling in the form of a waterfall, welcome to the Asalia show and it was raining asalias (the bauble) and suddenly an image of me, imagine my funny face, a smile from ear to ear and the laughter of the people, but good laughs, all with great respect.
Así que Asalia es mi nombre artístico que amo, que va conmigo y además para todas partes.
En mi humilde opinión me gusta mucho más que eligieran el nombre, me parece muy especial y significativo, de como los demás me perciben y sientes, y sinceramente conecta conmigo.
So Asalia is my artistic name that I love, that goes with me and also everywhere. In my humble opinion, I like it much more that they chose the name, it seems very special and meaningful to me, of how others perceive and feel me, and it sincerely connects with me.
